This week Lori told us about the new Monsanto Protection Act which basically lets Monsanto do anything they want to do and protects them from any sort of legal punishment. This is very scary news for the health of our nation, our children, and our environment.

I learned a long time ago that the most important part of creating any change is to first change myself. It is a daunting task to take on Monsanto and with the government curled up inside their pockets, they will be extremely hard to stop. Fortunately, there are lots of things that we can all do to protect ourselves! Let’s get crafty and create a beautiful, GMO-free world!!

GROW A GARDEN

The best way to truly know your food and the impact it has on the environment is to grow it yourself! If you have never gardened before, then start small and just grow a few things. You can grow in the ground or in pots, in vertical gardens, on patios, in a community garden.. Below are a few examples of how to grow a garden in creative ways.

How to Keep Monsanto Out of Your Garden

Monsanto has bought up a significant amount of the seed market, almost 40%! This includes organic and heirloom seeds, so you need to buy seeds from a trusted source that does not carry any Monsanto seed stock.

Shop Locally

Most of us aren’t able to commit the time and space to growing ALL of the food that we eat. For whole foods, meats, and dairy that you don’t raise or grow at home – find a local source! When you shop locally, you can talk to the farmer personally and find out all about their practices. There are farmers markets in every big city and most small towns too. If there isn’t a farmers market nearby, there may be several farmers that you don’t know about. LocalHarvest is a fabulous resource for finding local food in your area!

Avoid Processed Foods

Most processed and prepared foods in most grocery stores across the USA contain a lot of GMO ingredients. Familiarize yourself with the ingredients that are likely to come from GMO crops and actively avoid those foods. The best way to keep GMO out of your diet is to prepare all of your meals from WHOLE FOOD ingredients (from your garden and local farmers).

It is disturbing and completely horrendous that Monsanto and other GMO food companies are getting away with such extreme atrocities. GMOs are a death sentence to all diversity in the natural world so we need to be proactive in keeping them out of our lives. Does anyone have more crafty ideas on how to actively avoid and fight against Monsanto and all GMO foods? Please leave your comments below.
